Artist Statement
I research and create artworks on the theme of "the relationship between animals and humans. The form of expression is an installation using video, sculpture, text, and sound. I conduct research on the relationship between animals and humans, and explore expression based on the contradictions and discomfort that arise in the process.
The way animals and humans relate to each other differs greatly depending on individual thoughts, values, times, cultures, and regions. It is impossible to understand the subjectivity of animals and to know completely what kind of relationship they desire. As a result, each human being relates to animals in his or her own unique way. Different regions also have different views of animals. However, when trying to understand how other people relate to animals, we sometimes feel discomfort or contradiction arising from different perspectives and interpretations.
The animals that form the subject matter of the work are familiar to people in their daily lives and to the people of the region, including insects such as mosquitoes and ants, birds, reptiles, and mammals. We target animals that people are likely to talk about with interest and express their values. In the research process, we will gather information through the Internet and books, as well as by visiting the local area and engaging deeply with the people there in the form of interviews. I also sometimes work on projects. Through my work, I will explore what kind of attitudes and perspectives one should have in relation to animals.
